Program Overview
The Systems Science and Industrial Engineering (SSIE) Department offers a unique and internationally recognized curriculum that emphasizes faculty-student collaboration as well as teamwork across disciplines and various divisions of engineering, business and industry.
The MS in systems science (MS SS) emphasizes the complementary use of mathematical, computational and heuristic approaches to solving systems problems. Both thesis and non-thesis options are available. Research areas include fuzzy logic, data analysis and knowledge discovery, uncertainty theories, generalized information theory, soft computing, intelligent control and robotics, decision making and complex systems.
The MS in industrial and systems engineering (MS ISE) includes research areas such as applied probability and statistics, quality assurance for engineers, modeling and simulation, and enterprise systems engineering. Students must also complete four courses in an area of specialization or from a list of approved courses outside the department. Both thesis and non-thesis options are available.
The MEng in either industrial engineering or systems engineering is a practice-oriented degree that is designed for full-time professionals who are attending graduate school part-time. Using the industrial resources available in the ßÙßÇÂþ» community, students are able to develop a realistic approach to integrating both engineering and non-engineering systems such as those found in manufacturing, healthcare and transportation.
Two PhD programs are offered, one in Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) and another in Systems Science (SS). Research areas include modeling and simulation, complex systems, machine learning, optimization, intelligent systems, human factors/ergonomics, health systems, supply chain management, and electronics manufacturing processes, particularly in the areas of printed circuit board production and automated assembly.
A health systems concentration is available for both MS programs. The department also offers a one-year executive health systems program based in Manhattan and a certificate program in complex systems.

Internships, Research Opportunities and More
The department is dedicated to providing students with support at every level. For example, students can take advantage of the Watson Institute for Systems Excellence, a research institute for advanced studies at the University that unites students and sponsors from the industry to conduct innovative research. Aside from the invigorating coursework, students also gain real-life experience through cutting-edge, industry-based research. In addition, Watson Career and Alumni Connections offers professional advice and services such as interview guidance, cover letter critiques and networking opportunities.
After You Graduate
Alumni transition easily into positions in academia and careers in industry. Graduates have been placed in companies such as IBM, Alta Devices and BAE Systems, and institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, General Electric Global Research, Western Washington University and Tennessee Technological University. The most recent graduating class has enjoyed a 100% placement rate in full-time employment.

Funding/Scholarships

We encourage prospective students to review available program-specific scholarships and awards, and visit the program's website for additional information. PhD students who are registered and/or certified full-time will receive a scholarship that covers the cost of broad-based fees (this does not include international student fees). Note: Master's students are generally self-funded, although funding opportunities occasionally arise.
