Wrestling season includes match at Penn State

ßÙßÇÂþ» wrestling has released its 2016-17 schedule, as the Bearcats will host eight home contests this season. ßÙßÇÂþ» won 11 matches last season and will return all but one starter from its regular lineup.
Coach Matt Dernlan enters his fifth season at ßÙßÇÂþ». He has guided ten Bearcats to NCAA Championships appearances in his first four years at ßÙßÇÂþ».
In 2016-17, Dernlan’s squad will open the campaign with the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open, one of the largest tournaments in collegiate wrestling. On Nov. 13, more than 400 wrestlers will compete at the Events Center.
ßÙßÇÂþ» hits the road for the New York State Championships the following weekend and then will head to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 2-3.
ßÙßÇÂþ» will have an action-packed weekend Dec. 9-11 as fans can see the Bearcats grapple in three different states over three days. ßÙßÇÂþ» returns to campus for its first dual bout on Dec. 9, as Hofstra visits the West Gym. The Bearcats begin Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) action the next day, as they compete at Princeton. ßÙßÇÂþ» completes its weekend with a trip to national-power Penn State on December 11.
After the winter break, Dernlan’s squad hits the mat on Jan. 8, as Columbia comes to the West Gym. ßÙßÇÂþ» will then head to the Pitt Duals on Jan. 14 before returning home for a pair of home contests. Drexel and Army visit Vestal on Jan. 20 and 22, respectively.
ßÙßÇÂþ» opens a four-match road trip at Brown on Jan. 27 and then wrestles at Sacred Heart, American, and Bucknell over a two-week stretch. A three-match home stand closes the regular season, as Penn, Buffalo, and Bloomsburg come to the West Gym.
Bucknell hosts the 2017 EIWA Championships on March 4-5 and then the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri, is the site of this season’s NCAA Championships on March 16-18.
Steve Schneider leads the large group of returners for ßÙßÇÂþ». Schneider, a junior, qualified for the NCAA Championships at 184 pounds last season. Jacob Nicholson won 20 matches as a a 133-pound junior, while Vincent DePrez was a 20-bout winner at 157 pounds.
