Omowunmi A. Sadik, professor of chemistry and director of the Center for Advanced Sensors and Environmental Systems at ßÙßÇÂþ», has been admitted as a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in Britain. Fellowship is awarded to nominees who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement or application of chemical science or who have demonstrated excellence in the chemical science profession. Sadik serves as nanotechnology editor for the Journal of Environmental Monitoring, which is published by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Francis Yammarino, distinguished professor of management and director of the Center for Leadership Studies, was selected as the 2010 recipient of the Distinguished Leadership Scholar Award, given by the Academy of Management’s Leadership Network and The Leadership Quarterly “for outstanding career contributions to the study of leadership.” The award session and reception will take place at the Academy of Management Conference in Montreal.

Erik Colon, academic advisor in the Harpur Academic Advising Office, has received the Dr. John Hernandez Leadership Award from the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). The award is given to an outstanding practitioner in the field of student affairs who has demonstrated leadership, citizenship and active participation within the Latin@ Network.

John Smelcer, a Clifford D. Clark Fellow in English who received a graduate student award for research last semester, has a new novel out. Based loosely on a true story, Edge of Nowhere, is about a young man who falls overboard from a commercial fishing boat during a storm in Prince William Sound, Alaska. Presumed drowned, he must make his way homeward, island by island, surviving off the land.
