University receives record-breaking 50,100 applications
welcomes new and returning students and their families on Aug. 18-21, with move-in days signifying the beginning of the fall semester and a new academic year.
Over 3,000 first-year students, 900 transfer students and 1,500 new graduate students are expected to join the community this year. Classes for all of ’s approximately 18,200+ students begin Tuesday, Aug. 23.
“We look forward to the energy and excitement our new students bring to campus when they arrive and move in,” President Harvey Stenger said. “Also, Welcome Week will offer a full slate of academic and social events that will help students get prepared and engaged for the coming academic year.”
received a record 50,100 applications this year, which includes nearly 41,700 first-year, 3,900 transfer and over 4,500 graduate student applications for fall 2022 admission.
The 41,700 undergraduate applications for acceptance into the Class of 2026 is also a new record and 5% more than last year’s record. This includes increases in out-of-state and international applications.
When students return they will also benefit from the more than $185 million in University construction projects underway or nearing completion this summer, including the Bartle Library project, sidewalk replacements, paving work, new furniture, additional green space and much more.
This semester, also welcomes new Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Donald Hall. Hall comes to from the University of Rochester, where he had served as the Robert L. and Mary L. Sproull Dean of Faculty of Arts, Sciences and Engineering, the largest academic unit on the UR campus, since 2018.
“I am thrilled to join the community. It’s a wonderful university and from the moment I set foot on campus, I could tell that it is a community that I would be honored to join,” Hall said. “Given my long background as a first-gen student, graduate of three state universities and faculty member at two state campuses, I truly feel like I have come home.”
continues to have a diverse class, with the geographic distribution reflecting New York state’s population. 35% of new students are from Upstate New York; 5% are from Broome and Tioga counties; 23% are from Long Island; and 26% are from New York City.
also anticipates welcoming around 450 new international students to the campus community this fall. Approximately 140 undergraduate and 400 graduate students from over 55 countries will arrive in , with the greatest numbers coming from China, India, Iran, Turkey and South Korea.
Around 900 transfer students with a mean GPA of 3.4 will also join the community this fall, including about 275 SUNY Broome Community College students, by far the largest number from any single community college. Another 180 students have signed up for the Advantage Program, a special, dual-admission program with SUNY Broome that allows students to become part of the community and live on the University’s campus while attending SUNY Broome.
