ranked among ‘Top Colleges in America’ by Forbes

tops SUNY schools, moves from #65 to #52 top college in America

has been named the leading SUNY in Forbes’ prestigious “Top Colleges in America” list. The ranking is based on factors including return on investment, alumni influence and student success.

on its annual list of the top 500 colleges in America. This marks a 13-point jump from its position at #65 in the 2022 list, putting above institutions like Tufts University (#55) Florida State University (#60) and Michigan State University (#63).

To determine the ranking, Forbes starts with a list of colleges based on their Carnegie Classification, a framework for classifying colleges and universities in the United States based on types of degrees offered, research output and specialty focus. After evaluating schools based on several databases – including the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System and College Scorecard – they rank the remaining schools by: alumni salary (20%), debt (15%), graduation rate (15%), Forbes American Leaders List (15%), return on investment (15%), retention rate (10%) and academic success (10%).

“Our students get a great education and go on to do great things, and this new list highlights that,” said President Harvey Stenger. “It’s an indicator that we’re doing the right things and a motivator to keep working harder for our students.”

At #52, is the top-ranked SUNY school on the list, ranking above Stony Brook (#96) and University at Buffalo (#118). The ranking also puts among the top 20 public universities in the country.

“I’m pleased to hear that has risen so dramatically on such a well-respected and high-profile list,” said Provost Donald Hall. “This is an institution where opportunities abound, and I hope that the ranking helps to send the message to prospective students and parents: is a top-tier school!”
