celebrates Juneteenth with 5K fun run
The Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, B-Healthy Campus Initiative and Campus Recreation are partnering for the first annual 5K Run, Walk and Roll event in honor of Juneteenth
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – To celebrate Juneteenth, the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, B-Healthy Campus Initiative and Campus Recreation are partnering for the first annual 5K Run, Walk and Roll event.
The free event will take place on Tuesday, June 18, one day before the official federal Juneteenth holiday, June 19. Check-in will begin at 11 a.m. at ’s Old Union Hall, and the 5K starts at noon. .
The 5K fun run is open to everyone on campus and in the greater community. Metered and paid parking is available to the general public. People of all ages and abilities are encouraged to participate, whether running, walking, or using a wheelchair. The route will follow the University’s “Campus Brain” sidewalk, a 1.3-mile loop around the campus, and will be accessible to all participants. B-Healthy markers will line the route.
“The idea of sponsoring a 5K was to engage the campus and local community in a physical activity to commemorate Juneteenth that would include everyone while providing an opportunity to share education about Juneteenth,” said Kimberly Peabody, director of health promotion and prevention services.
While the event won’t be timed—at least not this year—and no medals will be given away, healthy snacks and infused water will be available, and the first 100 registrants will receive a free tee-shirt.
“We are excited to partner with B-Healthy Campus Initiative and Campus Rec on an event that not only incorporates a fun, healthy activity but also encourages participation from across the entire community,” said event organizer Ada Robinson-Perez, executive director of the Office of Equity and Access, who first proposed the idea to Peabody and other campus partners.
