Access to ßÙßÇÂþ»­ Records

The Freedom of Information Law (NYS Public Officers Law, Section 6) provides access to ßÙßÇÂþ»­ records with exception to records that fall within the denial provisions outlined in NYS Public Officers Law Section 87 (2). Requests for records are processed by the ßÙßÇÂþ»­ Records Access Office.

Requesting University Police Records

University Police records are processesed via the FOIL request procedure. If you are requesting police records, please refer to the below instructions. Please also include specific information such as the report number, time/date/location of the incident, and any identifying details that will allow University Police to search and compile the requested records. Please direct all communication to the Records Access Office. 

How to Submit a FOIL Request

Requests for records must be made in writing and can be submitted:

2)      By mail or delivered in person to: ßÙßÇÂþ»­ Records Access Office – Risk Management & Administrative Compliance, Couper Administration Building, PO Box 6000 ßÙßÇÂþ»­, NY 13902

Contents of FOIL Request

Requests must reasonably describe a currently-existing record. Agencies are not required to create records for FOIL requests. Please include your name and contact information to allow for efficient communication throughout the process.   

FOIL Request Process

Requests for records are acknowledged within 5 business days from receipt of the request. The agency will search, compile and review requested records. The agency will issue a response within 20 business days from the date of the acknowledgement granting or denying the request in whole, or in part. If more time beyond 20 business days is needed to issue a response, the agency may issue a reasonable extension and provide a date certain to the requester. 

Fees

The law states that no more than 25 cents may be charged per page for copies or the actual cost of producing the information.
