American Red Cross

American Red Cross certification courses are offered at the East Gym every semester.  Register for any course (after logging in, navigate to Certifications and then Wellness). Class sizes are limited.

All of our courses offered are in a blended learning format, where there will be online work that must be completed before the start of the class. After you register for a course, you will receive an email with more information on how to complete the online training. These online trainings take between 1–3 hours to complete. Completion of the blended learning online portion is tracked through the Red Cross Learning Center website.

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS)

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) uses a scenario-based approach to develop the critical thinking and problem solving skills that drive better patient outcomes. It is consistent with AHA Guidelines for CPR/ECC, and covers breathing and cardiac emergencies, including CPR, AED, and obstructed airway, for adult, child, and infant patients. 

Successful students will receive a certificate for Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) valid for two years.

CPR/AED/First Aid

The CPR/AED/Adult First Aid course incorporates the latest science and teaches students to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies such as burns, cuts, scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck, back injuries, heat and cold emergencies and how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies for victims about 12 years and older.

Successful students will receive a certificate for Adult First Aid/CPR/AED valid for two years.

CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers

  • 6–9:30 p.m. Monday, May 5
  • $110 (includes handbook, mask and certificate)
  • EG-18

The CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers (CPRO) program trains professional-level rescuers to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. The term professional rescuer refers to those with a duty to act. These professions range from healthcare to public safety to athletic training and recreation, including lifeguards. 

Successful students will receive a CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers certification valid for two years.

Lifeguard 

  • March 28–30
  • 5 – 10 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
  • $350 (includes manual and certificate)
  • Must be at least 15 years of age by the last day of the course

The Lifeguard Certification course is designed and taught by professionals to help others stay safe, in or around the water. Successful students will receive a lifeguard certification valid for two years. 

*Participants must meet the following two prerequisites in order to register for the class:

Prerequisite 1: Swim tread swim sequence

While swimming, participants must swim continuously, keeping their face in the water and demonstrating good breath control. Participants may use the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed. 

    1. Jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim 150 yards.
    2. After swimming 150 yards, maintain position at the surface of the water without support for 2 minutes by treading.
    3. After maintaining position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes, swim 50 more yards. 

Prerequisite 2: Timed event  

Participants have 1 minute, 40 seconds to complete the following sequence:

    1. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water.
    2. Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    3. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface. Swimming the distance underwater is not permitted.
    4. Exit the water without using a ladder or the steps.  

Lifeguard Review

  • Saturday, March 2 OR Sunday, May 4
  • 9 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.
  • $200 (includes certificate)

The American Red Cross Lifeguard Review is a class designed to update your skills and renew your current Red Cross Lifeguarding certification valid for another 2 years. 

*Participants must have and bring CPR/AED, Lifeguard, and first aid certification, as well as a breathing mask, to class. Certifications must be current or no more than 30 days expired. If certification is more than 30 days expired, participants must take a full lifeguarding course.

Lifeguard Instructor 

  • April 25–27
  • 7 – 9 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
  • $400  (includes manual and certificate)
  • Must be at least 17 years of age by the last day of the course

The purpose of the American Red Cross r. 24 Lifeguarding Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the basic-level courses in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program.

*Prerequisites:

  • Be at least 17 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the Lifeguarding Instructor course.
  • Possess a current basic-level certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid. (Note: r.17 Lifeguarding certification accepted)
  • Obtain instructor and participant course materials before starting the course.
  • Successfully complete the online session of the Lifeguarding Instructor course prior to the precourse session.
  • Successfully complete the prerequisite skill assessment scenario to continue in the course. The prerequisite skill assessment scenario evaluates the following skills:
    • Entry
    • Swimming approach
    • Surface dive in deep water (7 to 10 feet)
    • Passive submerged rescue
    • Rapid extrication (with an assisting rescuer)
    • Rapid assessment
    • Single-rescuer CPR (3 minutes)

Lifeguard Instructor/Instructor Training Review

  • Saturday, May 10
  • 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. 
  • $200 (includes certificate)

The American Red Cross r.24 Lifeguarding Instructor Recertification course allows instructors to review and refresh their knowledge and skills in a formal course setting to maintain their certification. Successfully completing this course is the only way to retain certification as a Lifeguarding Instructor. Candidates whose certification has been expired for no more than two years may take the Lifeguarding Instructor Crossover/Reentry course. Those with expired certifications beyond this period must enroll in the full Lifeguarding Instructor course.

*Participants must have a current or recently expired American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor certification (expired no more than one year) and must successfully complete the online portion of the Lifeguarding Instructor Recertification course before attending the in-person session.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) 

  • May 2–4
  • 5:30 – 10:30 p.m Friday; 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
  • $400 (includes manual and certificate)
  • Must be at least 16 years of age by the last day of the course

The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course is designed to teach you the necessary skills needed to teach courses and work with others in the water. Instructor candidates must come to class with some basic swimming skills, as this is not a Learn-to-Swim course. Successful students will receive a certificate for Water Safety Instruction valid for two years. 

*Participants must pass a pre-course swim test to demonstrate swimming skills consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts, Level 4, by swimming the following strokes: Front Crawl (25 yards), Back Crawl (25 yards), Breaststroke (25 yards), Elementary backstroke (25 yards), Sidestroke (25 yards), Butterfly (15 yards), as well as being able to maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling) and tread water for 1 minute.

Waterfront Lifeguarding Module

  • Saturday, April 5
  • 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • $150 (includes certificate)

The Waterfront Skills Module in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program equips participants, already certified in Lifeguarding (including deep water training of 7 feet or deeper), with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies in non-surf, open-water environments such as public parks, resorts, summer camps and campgrounds.

*Participants must complete a pre-requisite skills evaluation which consists of:

Prerequisite 1: Swim tread swim sequence

  3. After maintaining position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes, swim 200 more yards.

Prerequisite 2: Timed event

Participants have 1 minute, 40 seconds to complete the following sequence:

  1. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed).
  2. Submerge to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  3. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
  4. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Prerequisite 3: Underwater swim

  1. Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 to 7 feet of water.
  2. Resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards.
