Things to think about before moving off campus

Here are some things to consider before making the decision to move to an off-campus residence. It's not a decision that should be taken lightly. Living off campus has its benefits and challenges. Ask yourself these questions to help make the right decision for you. Once you've answered all the questions below, search for a property that meets all of your criteria using the .

Ask yourself these questions: 

  • What kind of rental unit do you want to live in?

  • What are your transportation needs?

  • What features are essential?

  • What are your financial means and can you afford to live off campus?

      • Set a realistic budget for your housing expenses, including rent, utilities, and other associated costs. Make sure you choose a housing option that aligns with your financial situation to avoid unnecessary stress.

  • What type of housing do you want?
  • Are you ready to be more independent and take on additional responsibilities?
  • Will you be able to manage and pay all my bills?
  • Are you willing to spend the extra time to commute to class?
  • Do you know what type of transportation you will use? (car, bike, bus)?
  • Do you have time to shop for groceries and cook your own meals?
  • Do you have an idea who you would like to live with off campus?
      • If you plan to live with roommates, make sure you communicate and establish clear expectations regarding rent, utilities, chores, and shared spaces.
      • Choose roommates who are responsible and compatible with your lifestyle. Make sure you and your prospective roommates fill out our roommate compatibility checklist before you decide to move in together.
  • Will you be able to communicate effectively with your roommates and/or neighbors?
  • Are you familiar with city codes and ordinances, and how they can affect you?
